Major streetcar development contract for three Saxon cities
Large streetcar development contract for three Saxon cities
In mid-March, the contract was signed with the Leipzig-based company HeiterBlick for the mechanical development services and system integration for the new streetcars for Leipzig, Görlitz and Zwickau. We are delighted to be working on this scale for our home state of Saxony for the first time in the company's history.
We would like to thank the two consortium partners HeiterBlick and Kiepe Electric for their trust and the opportunity to continue our proven collaboration. Project Manager of HÖRMANN Vehicle Engineering Markus Römer comments: "Based on our previous cooperation for the streetcars in Hanover, Dortmund and Würzburg, we know exactly what our shared responsibilities are and will work together very efficiently in the development process for these vehicles for the three cities."
The Saxon cities of Leipzig, Görlitz and Zwickau are procuring new low-floor streetcars following a joint tender based on one platform. In total, including all options, this involves 187 vehicles in four different versions, which are to be delivered in the period up to 2030. The total order volume for the vehicle deliveries is around €600 million.
The LEIWAG consortium with HeiterBlick as consortium leader, responsible for the vehicle construction part, and Kiepe Electric responsible for the electrical equipment, was able to sign the final contract for delivery with the three Saxon cities on December 15, 2021. HÖRMANN Vehicle Engineering developed the vehicle concept and, in collaboration with the consortium, prepared the majority of the technical documents required for the tender.
Since the start of the project, the specifications have been derived from the requirements specification in close coordination with Leipzig's public transport operators, Görlitz's public transport operators and Stadtwerke Zwickau, and development work has begun. A 45 m long 5-section XXL version and a 30 m long L version for a track gauge of 1458 mm are being designed for Leipzig, and an approx. 30 m long L version for 1000 mm track gauge for Görlitz and Zwickau. The XXL train will be the largest train that has ever run through Leipzig.
It is the largest single order for HÖRMANN Vehicle Engineering to date. By 2024, more than 100 engineers will be working on the complete mechanical development and system integration as well as on the development of the electrical part. "It is particularly pleasing that, after numerous streetcar projects abroad (including Beijing, Chengdu, Shenyang, New Taipei City) and in Germany, we have finally succeeded in realizing a project in and for Saxony" emphasizes Frank Salzwedel, Managing Director of HÖRMANN Vehicle Engineering.
